Call for chapters: Restorative Justice in Educational Settings and Policies: Bridging the East and W

The restorative justice literature is rich in its depiction of Western culture, practices, norms and theories. It is only recently that we started to explore its normative dimension and practical manifestation in the East. In fact, some have claimed that it is in ancient civilisations such as Persia, China, and Pakistan where the roots of restorative justice can be traced. It is indeed rather arrogant to believe that the restorative justice ethos and practice are Western developments.

Therefore this edited collection aims to bridge our current knowledge gap by focusing on East civilisations including: Iran, Pakistan, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Bringing together scholars from the East, this timely and unique book focuses on the implementation of restorative justice in educational settings. At the heart of restorative justice lies empowerment and as Nelson Mandela once said "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Understanding how empowerment is achieved in the East through the articulation of the restorative justice ethos and the implementation of its practices is a neglected area of research.

Book objectives:

  1. Build a bridge between the restorative justice literature in the West and East.

  2. Learn about the normative development of restorative justice in the East.

  3. Identify and explore case studies of restorative justice in schools and other formal and informal educational settings.

  4. Research and compare political and policy approaches in the East focusing on educational policies and institutions.

  5. Contextualise restorative justice theory and practice within the notion of empowerment by focusing on its implementation in educational settings in the East.

Call for Abstracts:

The two editors, Professors Wong and Gavrielides, represent the East and West restorative justice movements, and are calling for Abstracts for their intended publication. These must be sent in one Word file to:

  • by no later than 31 August 2018

The file should include​

  • An abstract of 300 words addressing at least one of the book's key objectives

  • Author(s) full contact details and affiliations

  • Proposed title

  • Whether the paper has already been written/ if already written, whether the paper is cleared from restrictions and that it has not been published elsewhere.

The editors will make a selection by September 2018 with the intention of publishing the book in 2019. Full papers will need to be submitted by 1 January 2019 and will need to be between 7,000 - 10,000 words and follow the APA reference style.

The book will be published by the leading publishing house on restorative justice RJ4All Publications and the home of the only dedicated peer reviewed journal The Internet Journal of Restorative Justice.
