1st International Symposium on Restorative Justice: Philosophy & Human Rights

The first Symposium was held in Skopelos during 2-7 June 2012, bringing together an exclusive group of 21 leading international names from the field of restorative justice and human rights. The event was supported by the the Mayor of Skopelos. The structure and location of the symposium enabled the ‘symposiarchs’ (the participating guests) to debate their papers and delve into concepts and issues in an engaging and enriching environment. Sessions took place at local beaches, bars with beautiful views of the ocean and surrounding mountains, a local artist's villa house and at a Byzantine Monastery. The locations were truly inspiring. The event closed with an ancient Greek style symposium at the ancient ground of the temple of Asclepeion. The delegates participated in a libation in the ancient Asclepeion. The Symposium led to the Ashgate publication of "Reconstructing Restorative Justice Philosophy", a novel volume in the use of a deconstructive and reconstructive approach, where the fundamental underpinnings of restorative justice are interrogated through a critical analysis of restorative justice philosophy.
